Matt Austin is one of the biggest names in the sport of bull riding today. Growing up in a family full of rodeo athletes, it’s no surprise that his winning ways started while he was in high school. In 2001, Matt was the Lone Star High School Rodeo Association champion as well as the United Pro Rodeo Association bull riding champion. In 2002, Austin, who’s been nicknamed “Poindexter” because of riding with his glasses on, joined the PRCA and quickly made his presence known.
Matt has a long list of accomplishments. In 2003, he won both the overall title and the rookie of the year, while earning a total of $63,089. In 2004, he finished third at the College National Finals Rodeo and second in the PRCA world standings taking home $187,302 for the year. The 2005 season proved to be Matt’s break out year, winning the College National Finals Rodeo in addition to collecting the PRCA bull riding world championship. Austin set a new record for the highest single-season earnings with $320,896 in the bull riding while also winning the bull riding aggregate at the NFR covering seven bulls for a total of 586.5 points. In 2006, Matt continued his winning ways by finishing the year as the regular season leader. However, after suffering a torn muscle in his abdomen and groin, he was forced to withdraw from competition during the 2006 NFR. Austin underwent surgery to repair his injuries and is scheduled to return to competition in 2008.
Matt is notably one of the greatest bull riders of his time. His hobbies include roping and playing video games. You may also catch him watching a Dallas Cowboys football game. Cinch jeans is proud to be endorsed by one of the best bull riders in the industry and looks forward to seeing Matt Austin back in competition in 2008.
